This Climatecafé is part of the ‘Bewonersparticipatie in Klimaatadaptatie’ or in English – Residents Participation in Climate Adaptation project of (among others) the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the Municipality of Groningen and the Noorderzijlvest Water Board and PhD research at the University of Groningen.

Our weather is getting more and more extreme. Think of the long heat wave last summer in which lawns slowly began to resemble the African savannah. We also see more and more extreme showers where sometimes a month of rain falls from the sky in a few hours. This has major effects on our living environment and requires adjustment!
But where and how can we adapt?
These questions are central to the PhD Research of Allard Hans Roest on climate adaptation and the ‘Resident Participation in Climate Adaptation’ project, in which he is involved from the University of Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences.

With this online Climatecafé, Allard took citizens along in his research that he is conducting together with colleagues from Hanze University of Applied Sciences and the University of Groningen.

By means of three assignments they invited residents of Groningen to think about extreme weather in their living environment. By doing this together we were able to learn more about the effects of extreme weather and climate adaptation at street level. And above all to think together about how we, as a municipality, water boards, researchers and residents, can achieve a climate-proof and liveable city together.

The results of this climatecafé will be used in (scientific) research about extreme weather in the urban environment and will also be shared (anonymously) with municipalities and water boards for inspiration and hopefully to realize some of the plans.
